Lori Ann Piestewa was born in Tuba City, Arizona and raised with strong Hopi and Hispanic roots, a deep sense of duty and a spirit of perseverance. Inspired by her family’s military tradition, she joined the Army to provide a secure future for her children.
In 2003, as a member of the 507th Maintenance Company, Piestewa volunteered for deployment to Iraq, where she drove convoys and supported her team under fire. After her unit was ambushed, she became the first Native American woman to be killed in combat during the Iraq War. Piestewa’s bravery, selflessness, and commitment to her fellow soldiers continue to inspire her family, her community and the nation she served.
