Planting Fall crops can be tricky depending on your climate. In my area of the PNW the weather can vary significantly this time of year from above 85 degrees to quickly dropping into the 60’s as Fall temps approach.
- The key to fall crops is protecting seedlings indoors at a controlled temperature and giving them a head start to size up before we begin to lose too much of our light levels.
- I’ve attempted to grow a fall garden but mistakenly planted directly outdoors or started the seedlings too late outdoors. These mistakes limited the plant’s growth and they weren’t able to get large enough before winter temps came.
- I also learned to cover brassica plants with mesh which prevents cabbage moths from laying eggs on the leaves and gives them the best chance for success!
I’m hoping to be harvesting small broccolini shoots and kale leaves in mid to late Fall this year and allow the plants to overwinter so they can keep growing early next Spring.
Get some seedlings in the ground soon and enjoy the low work Fall garden as the season winds down and the rains return! Happy gardening!
