Black Scientists Who Changed the World
Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, Physicist: Dr. Jackson is a physicist and president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. She studies how particles move, and she is the first African American woman to receive a doctoral degree from MIT.
Dr. Beth Brown, Astrophysicist: Dr. Brown was the first black woman to receive a Ph. D. in astronomy from the University of Michigan. An astrophysicist at NASA, she also served in leadership roles with the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Conference of Black Physics Students.
Dr. Ayanna Howard, Robotics Engineer: Dr. Howard is the first woman to lead the Department of Engineering at The Ohio State University. She’s contributed greatly to the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, and computer vision.
Dr. Christine Darden, Aerospace Engineer: Dr. Darden was an aerospace engineer who worked with NASA for over 40 years. She was an expert in designing wings for aircraft that traveled faster than the speed of sound.
