What the Roe v. Wade decision means for our users —>
In light of today's Roe v. Wade decision, we want to make it clear that we will do everything in our power to protect the data and privacy of our users. Many of us at Bellabeat understand firsthand how it feels to fear for our reproductive autonomy and we want you to be sure that, at this fraught moment, we hear the anger and the anxiety coming from our US user community.
While we navigate this new reality, we promise to remain strongly committed to protecting both you and your reproductive health data, and support you every step of the way.
Here’s our founder Urska Srsen explaining the new encryption feature.
“That’s why we’re rolling out a Private Key Encryption (AES-256) feature. This feature will enable our user to access and decrypt her own data using her private key via her Bellabeat smartphone app. The data that will be therefore stored on our servers will be in it’s encrypted form only, meaning no one that can access our servers (lawfully or unlawfully) and the data stored on the servers will be able to read it without holding individual user’s private key.
A private key is a password or a pin code that only the user herself knows or stores on her private device. Without that key, her data is unreadable.
This means an extra layer of security designed to ensure our users’ safety. This also means the user can be sure that we are unable to leak or sell their data and that breaking into our servers means no threat to their personal safety. It also means that we are doing all we can to ensure that we cannot find ourselves in a position as a company where we could be forced to submit users’ private data in its readable form.
The feature is currently in testing and will be rolled out within all Bellabeat products that have women’s reproductive health tracking features (period and pregnancy data tracking) predictably by end of July.”
