Vincent Patton III was born in Detroit in 1954, where he grew up an Eagle Scout and Sea Cadet before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard. While on active duty, he earned multiple college degrees, including a doctorate in education, and went on to serve in a wide range of roles from radioman and recruiter to training manager and senior enlisted advisor for critical operations.
In 1998, Patton made history as the first African American to serve as Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, the service’s highest enlisted post, advising top military and government leaders. Patton’s pioneering career set new standards for leadership and mentorship across the Coast Guard, leaving a legacy of opportunity, excellence and service for future generations.
